Florida has reached a significant milestone in its effort to strengthen public safety across the state. Governor Ron DeSantis announced on March 12 that more than 10,000 law enforcement officers have received $5,000 recruitment bonuses since Florida launched its Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Program in 2022.

The most recent distribution provided bonuses to 744 officers statewide, totaling more than $5 million in after-tax incentives, bringing the program’s total investment to over $67.9 million since the initiative began.

The milestone highlights Florida’s aggressive strategy to recruit and retain law enforcement officers at a time when many agencies across the United States continue to face staffing shortages.

“Today we announced a major milestone for Florida’s Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Program — more than 10,000 bonuses have now been distributed to officers who chose to serve our communities.”

Governor Ron DeSantis discussed the milestone in a video posted to his official X account announcing the latest round of recruitment bonuses.

Florida’s Strategy to Strengthen Police Recruiting

The recruitment bonus program was created through legislation signed by Governor Ron DeSantis following the 2022 legislative session. The program provides a one-time $5,000 after-tax bonus to newly certified law enforcement officers who begin their careers in Florida or relocate to the state from another jurisdiction.

The goal of the program is to attract qualified officers from across the country while supporting Florida agencies struggling to fill open positions due to retirements, population growth, and increased demand for public safety services.

Florida has positioned itself as one of the most proactive states in the nation when it comes to investing in law enforcement personnel and strengthening the recruiting pipeline.

Addressing the National Police Staffing Challenge

Across the United States, many law enforcement agencies are experiencing historic staffing shortages. Departments are competing for a smaller pool of qualified applicants while also managing retirements and increasing service demands from growing communities.

Florida’s recruitment bonus program has become one of the most visible statewide initiatives designed to address these challenges. By offering financial incentives and career support programs, the state has successfully attracted experienced officers and new recruits seeking stable and supportive law enforcement careers.

For many officers considering relocation, Florida’s policies have positioned the state as an attractive destination for continuing their careers in public safety.

Pathways for Out-of-State and Military Police Officers

One of the primary pathways for experienced officers relocating to Florida is the Equivalency of Training (EOT) process administered by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).

The EOT process allows certain qualified applicants including out-of-state law enforcement officers, federal officers, and military police to obtain Florida certification without attending a full basic recruit academy.

Candidates must first complete a CJSTC Form-76 eligibility review, which determines whether their prior training and experience meet Florida certification standards. Once approved, eligible applicants may attend a 4½-day Equivalency of Training course before taking the State Officer Certification Examination (SOCE) required for Florida law enforcement licensure.
